CHOLERA OUTBREAK ALERT: APAPA LOCAL GOVERNMENTS PREVENTIVE MEASURES AND COMMUNITY GUIDANCE.

In light of the recent cholera outbreak in various parts of Lagos State, Hon. Idowu Adejumoke SENBANJO, the Executive Chairman of Apapa Local Government, has called upon the residents to adhere strictly to the health guidelines issued by the State Ministry of Health. Although Apapa has not yet reported any cases, the proactive measures implemented by the local government are crucial in preventing the spread of this potentially fatal disease.

Cholera is a highly contagious disease characterized by severe diarrhea, vomiting, and rapid dehydration. It spreads primarily through the consumption of contaminated food or water. Poor sanitation and inadequate access to clean drinking water significantly increase the risk of cholera outbreaks, especially in urban slums and densely populated areas.

Recently, the Lagos State Ministry of Health reported an alarming number of severe gastroenteritis cases in areas including Eti Osa, Lagos Island, Ikorodu, and Kosofe LGA, with 60 hospital admissions and five fatalities due to extreme dehydration. These cases have raised concerns about a potential cholera outbreak, prompting heightened surveillance and response efforts.

Hon. Adejumoke SENBANJO, recognized for her dedication to the community’s health, has emphasized the importance of following preventive measures. She assures that the local government has enforced strict sanitation protocols to safeguard the residents. However, she urges continued vigilance and adherence to guidelines to avoid becoming victims of the outbreak.

Preventive Measures

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, has outlined critical preventive measures for residents:

Boil, chlorinate, or use bottled water. Avoid ice products made from untreated water.

Use toilets, dispose of feces safely, and avoid open defecation.

Wash hands regularly with soap and clean water, especially before eating, preparing food, and after using the toilet.

Follow food safety guidelines meticulously.

Treatment Options

For those affected by cholera, prompt treatment is vital. Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) are recommended for mild to moderate dehydration, while severely dehydrated patients require intravenous fluids administered in medical facilities under professional supervision.

Community Support and Reporting

Hon. SENBANJO extends her condolences to families affected by the outbreak and reiterates the community’s support in these challenging times. Residents are encouraged to report suspected cholera cases through the designated emergency hotlines: 08023169485, 08137412348, or via 767 or 112.

The Lagos State Government, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, remains committed to the health and well-being of its citizens. By adopting preventive measures and maintaining high hygiene standards, the residents of Apapa can play a pivotal role in safeguarding their community against cholera. Continuous cooperation and vigilance are essential in these efforts, ensuring that Apapa remains resilient despite potential health threats.
